Why is distance so important with DSL?

Answered By Brayden Eckles, Editor

The subject of distance in DSL is very important because it will be a factor whether if the subscriber can still get DSL and what type of internet speed they can get. There are some rules from telephone companies that must be applied in certain distances:

- If the distance between the provider and the subscriber is less than 5,000 feet, there will be no problem in getting all speeds of DSL.

- If the distance between the provider and the user range from 5,000-15,000 feet, there will be trouble in getting highest speed offered.

- When the distance reached to 15,000-18,000 feet away from provider, ADSL is still available, although the speed will only reach for about 300-500 Kbps.

- In between 22,000-28,000 feet away, a user can only use ordinary DSL equipment. But it's still possible to use DSL with this kind of length.

- 28,000 feet and above, IDSL is the only choice.
