ADSL Broadband - The big leap from dialups to broadband

By Kathy Bhasam

Broadband in general refers to a signal or circuit which handles relatively high range of data frequencies. The wider the bandwidth of the cable the more information it can carry. Depending on the usage, the bandwidth is decided. Be it for television, radio or internet.

Initially dialup connections would connect to the internet by transmitting information at about 64 kbps over a telephone line using a dial up modem. Over the same telephone line, several megabytes per second are taken care of by an ADSL connection today.

ADSL stand for asymmetrical digital subscribers line: Basically broadband is a relative term, more the data traffic the boarder the band should be. The basis function of broadband is, to transfer information in the shape of small packets of data signals across the networks.

Broadband came to be popularized when in 1990`s, cable TV operators began to offer internet through cable connections. This lead to easy access to the internet. Without having to pay lengthy phones bills, and instead only a monthly subscription fees. Off course consumers made an immediate shift from dial up connection to broadband in a big way.

However, the phone operators remained averse to the idea of broadband connections to consumers, as this they presumed would affect their profits. With the rise of cable connections and fall in the subscription of dialup connections, phone companies were left with no option but to adopt the latest trend and they began offering broadband internet to their subscribers

Broadband connections coming from phone operators, launched themselves as ADSL connections, which provided greater speeds with an always on type of a connection

ADSL connection today is one of the most popular ways of connecting online. What makes them popular is the ease with which it connects and the quality of service. ADSLs are more popular with individual or home users, since they provide faster download and net access speeds. The working of an ADSL connection requires installing a high speed broadband connection and a splitter to the existing phone line.

Since ADSL connection, lack in upload speeds, a different flavor of broadband called DSL -Digital subscribers line, has gained acceptability and popularity with corporate and others using internet for business use.

ADSL and DSL connections, are both sensitive to distance. Hence is important to always keep this into consideration, while choosing a subscriber and give preference to the one, nearer, as speed and connectivity loose luster if distance increases more than the acceptable limits.
