Satellite Broadband Connection

SATELLITE BROADBAND CONNECTION

Broadband through satellite is a boon for people living in remote places as with its use the limitations regarding proximity to a cable company or a DSL exchange get eliminated. All data gets routed through communication satellites, thereby offering super fast speeds.

Types of satellite broadband

  • One way satellite broadband: This type of broadband access allows downloads but to upload any information you have to use a separate modem and a phone line.

  • Two way satellite broadband: Both downloads and uploads are possible, there by truly personifying all the qualities for which satellite broadband is known.
The two way satellite system has emerged as the technology of choice mainly because it provides complete solutions. There are certain hardware & software requirements before you can log on to the satellite network and these can be easily obtained from satellite broadband service providers.

    Software and hardware requirements

A single software* is required to get your PC ready for satellite access and the listed hardware are a perquisite for two way satellite broadband internet access.

  • Satellite dish: Your PC would be connected to this small dish to allow you to transmit and receive data from the geostationary satellites.
  • Modems: Two special type of satellite modems are required, one to downlink and other to uplink
  • Cables: Special type of cables known as coaxial cables is needed to do the networking of your satellite broadband system.

Furthermore the dish size depends on your geographical location as the geostationary satellites move over the equator, the nearer you are to the equator, smaller the size of the dish required.

Satellite broadband is an evolving technology and some rough edges still exist which need to be sorted out.

    Advantages of satellite broadband

  • Enduring bidirectional internet access
  • Super fast speeds
  • Unlimited bandwidth availability
  • Scalable to a very large extent
  • All free line, no busy signals
  • No geographical limitations
  • Multiple users can log on to a single satellite thereby providing economics of scale

    Disadvantages of satellite broadband

As a signal has to travel thousands of kilometers from your PC to satellite and then to the destination there is a certain amount of lag time but generally it is under permissible levels, apart from that certain instances of data loss have been observed but it is surely an oddity not the norm. Weather conditions can also play an important role, extreme conditions can disrupt your connection but that too is temporary in nature.

Satellite broadband can help you transcend the limitations of distance and time even with the minor disadvantages it get associated with. You can get satellite broadband by contacting service providers who specialise in satellite broadband solutions.

    * depends on the chosen service provider policies
